kirsten powers. i'm rick folbaum. we're on right now. has recent events in the middle east given you any pause on the government that have followed arab spring? >> i said at the time this is going to be a rock did i path. the question presumes we could have stopped this wave of change. i think it was absolutely the right thing to do align ourselves with democracy. universal rights. a notion that people have to be able to participate in their own governance, but i was pretty certain and continues to be pretty certain there are going to be bumps in the road.

in a lot of these places, one organizing principle has been islam. >> rick: president obama on 60 minutes and numerous remarks on cairo attacks and bump in the road comments ignored by the media and steve had a follow-up on that comment. >> they never follow up with the president. fundamental flaw in the media's thinking as exhibit by steve croft. they say the organized principle is islam. it's not just islam but extremist wing and maybe turkey and deinz but we don't know where that is going where the fundamentalist islam has been nonviolent or promoted the equality of women. editorials in newspapers all missed this because they don't have a religious perspective.

>> rick: the assassination of our ambassador, two former seals of a state department employee, where was the criticism over that comment? >> i think what the president was talking about was the broader context of the wave of change that in the wave of change they there is going to be bumps in the road. those people didn't interpret to mean that the death of four american officials is is a bump in the road. that being said there was so much in that 60 minutes interview. for example his calling netanyahu on a red line noise. there was so much that could have been followed up on and wasn't. i'm really surprised. >> rick: when governor romney delivered his initial response after the attack in benghazi he was ganged you. they coordinated their questions in the press conference. after the 60 minutes interview,

nothing. >> a few words from governor romney i bet he wishes he could take back and bumps comment went by unnoticed. which takes me back to another occasion where another u.s. president used a awkward and that was president reagan in the wake of beirut bombing when all the marines were killed. president made some statement, it takes time to fix your kitchen. it was an awkward statement just like president obama wasn't minimizing it but it was a week's news how president reagan is out of it. big news this whole thing, mohammed morsi saying it's unacceptable, instead of siding

but that is bump in the road. >> rick: collective outrage on the part of media? >> selective outrage. zero outrage of so many things that are outrageous. i guess most of outrage we've seen is this video that the administration elevated to a movie. it's not a movie. it's a youtube video that nobody ever saw. they are buying into this islamist line that there was a movie that somehow all these people saw. i also disagree with the idea of the president saying its bump in the road because it makes it sound like almost minor. what is going on is not minor having 20 different countries having anti-american uprisings in addition to having four americans killed is much more than a bump in the road. >> rick: so the president comes to new york and about to give his speech to united nations. in the years past they have had one on one meetings with world leaders. instead this president decided

to go on the view. take a listen. >> coaching the girls on the court or trying to get everybody in coming on the same page? >> no contest. the girls play like a team. [ applause ] >> congress needs to take. they pass the ball and high five each other. >> rick: so whoop pi over netanyahu. >> the president started all this stuff when he went on the laugh in and president going on the show and said, sock it to me. it shows the president and mrs. obama light and smiling

while all the others are speaking but when elizabeth has el batch starts to ask a question, hasselbeck, the president gets condescending and michelle obama's face is almost like this. >> rick: word that the president did have a conversation late in the week with the prime minister. the weight. media has covered the apparent problems between the two world leaders. what do you think? >> this is longest soap opera in foreign policy. we had to do something to make the damage less damaging. he did not have the 13 bilaterals he had the last time he was in new york. obama doesn't have any. media is saying that perfectly okay because the man is running for office. that is the explanation.

there should be no doubt we will be relentless in tracking down the killers and bringing them to justice. >> rick: president obama addressing the national general assembly on tuesday and how was the message received by the press? he didn't mention terror attacks. he talked a lot about youtube clip. how do you think the media responded? >> i think it was a forgettable speech. charles krauthammer was babbling. it's not the typical of media. netanyahu stole the show with the cartoon, right out of rocky and bullwin klef. that will be most famous images this year. >> rick: if you were following on twitter while he was giving his speech he was being mocked for using an illustration people

said was car tuneish. >> he was supposed to draw a nuclear bomb instead of a symbol for a bomb. the outrage he would do this was so dispositive portion at. there was no outrage what he was saying, the idea of iran having a nuclear weapon was not offensive but that cartoon. [ laughter ] >> rick: what about the coverage of the speech? >> i thought the "new york times" played it as the lead story of the day. for obama it was very tough speech. he did talk about the importance of american values and commitment to first amendment which he hadn't emphasized before. so the press in general, jim said, they tried to forget -- i think necessity covered it at great length. i think people that were listening to the speech like iran got the message, but i don't think they did. >> rick: we talked a little bit about the prime minister.

the wires services sent out a picture of the prime minister delivering his speech. let's take a look at this. why would they choose these two particular pictures to send out to clients all over the world. cal, what is up? >> this is so offensive. anybody who thinks that the media don't editorialize even in the pictures is a fool. the other thing they don't wish to understand is there is no moral equivalency between iran, israel and the united states. america and israel hold a certain values, pluralism and equal rights for women, we are in a cultural war, a clash of civilizations. media continue to buy into this myth that they bought into during world war ii and months and years preceding it that dictators can be appeased by

giving something that they lack. you see that in editorials and columnists and "washington post" and l.a. times. >> rick: so photo editors, netanyahu posing as the worst dictator in the history of dictatorships. what were they doing in f not to show political bias? >> what is atrocious about this, i'm not a huge netanyahu fan per se, but they have so much an must towards him they don't display like they do with mahmoud ahmadinejad. i don't think they should be allowed to send out a picture like that, but you don't ever see them expressing anger or disgusted that discuss about wiping a nation off the map. >> rick: the post is owned by

the same parent company as this network and that was the front page the other day. >> and it appears morgan syd, this was pretty good. they were looking -- but let's go back to how they covered obama's speech. krauthammer counted six apologies to the speech and then they figure out how to arrest the guy that made the video. it would have been much different. they are clearly letting obama get away with trouncing the person here to soothe relations, maybe a decent strategy to keep middle east mr. from boiling over. >> what was wrong were the speech, he was talking about terrorists and radical crazy people as if they care about it. he was speaking as if you just understood these things, we can

sit down and talk, you will stop doing it. they don't care. the argument was completely wasted and the speech he should have given was more like netanyahu was giving which is serious speech playing out the threat to the country and western world. >> on the contrary i think he put it to our allies if egypt is still an ally. he put it to them. do not try and ask for our assistance offer wanted us to stay and help you if you don't take care of your violence problems. >> it was so effective that president morsi accused us of having a war against islam. >> the one thing he was supposed to do is make sure that american personnel and property was protected in egypt after an hour long conversation, that has been covered pretty well by the media.

new poll asks who do national news organizations more time defending and attacking. they say 16% say the other way around. 47 say obama and attacking romney. >> when durable good orders falls and business investment cools down. 13% plunge as a mere cool down. >> rick: it sounds like the race is over and we haven't had the first debate yet? >> to be fair looking at the polls, i personally don't think it looks great for romney right now but the race could change by election day because we haven't had the debates. the media sort of wishful thinking trying to write off romney. i normally do not buy into ideas

that the media is on board on one side. this is the exception. this campaign, this campaign season has been especially egregious in terms of them ignoring things that are bad about president obama and those things that mitt romney has done wrong. >> chris: cal, why? >> why? you would have to ask why? my goodness. first of all, these polls we talked about this before on the show. i'm opposed to news organizations doing their own polls and making news from them. what you are going to see about ten days before the election is a lot of story line being, hey the race is tightening because they want to sell newspapers. this is a sophisticated form of fortune telling. i passed by a psychic, let me see who is going to win the election but it's the same

approach. >> rick: narrative that gets played out in the media, that it's almost over. if romney doesn't score big in the first debate in denver that it's definitely over. it's donors are going to jump him. does media create it or do they cherry pick and push those? >> this is where polls become so important. if you can cite a poll showing the gap between romney and obama growing and obama running away with it. you can really pile on and say, wow, this race is over. look early voting has begun in more than 20 states and 25% of the vote is actually determined by those early voters. you can make a case doing precisely kirsten warned about is prejudging the outcome of this election. >> rick: conservatives are not

happy with the mainstream polls. a lot of talk about the polls being weighted incorrectly for a news consumer listening to your pearls of wisdom. what would you say how they should interpret the polling that should be done right now? >> if you are curious, go to unskewed polls.com an attempt to rate the polls. fox news poll has romney down five points. it suggests romney is down. pat who is not a republican and pollster, says, look, what the media are doing is hitting hard and spending their own money and deciding to spend money on polls in virginia and ohio states where obama is clearly clobbering romney. see, he is 8 points. he miss be losing nationwide. it's not completely wrong but

it's to create a bandwagon effect that romney is a goner. >> rick: do you agree with him that we're going to hear tightening of the race and that is because the media wants to generated ratings or because there is a guilt on the mainstream media, maybe we should be covering this a little more fairly than we have bon been. you are shaking your head no? >> i do think media polls can be a little skewed. i have a friend that used to do it. ding, it's been cooked and here is what you wanted. the thing is, there is bias but it's evenly split. some are weighted towards republicans and some are weighted towards democrats so the real clear politics average so romney is down about four

points. which i think sounds right to people. >> one thing media doesn't do is do a survey of previous polls. remember carter was going to clobber reagan and there have been a number of inaccuracys just like the fortune tellers. >> rick: is the media still ignoring what happened in libya. >> more details surface about the deadly attacks on the u.s. consulate in libya. al-qaeda terrorists behind the murders of our ambassador and three other americans. what did the white house know and when did they know it? why aren't the media crying fowl, that is venture miles for a golf getaway. double miles you can actually use... but mr. single miles can't join his friends because he's getting hit with blackouts. shame on you. now he's stuck in a miniature nightmare.

ourselves. we watched a man kill himself after a car chase. a suspect stole a car and led cops on a long high-speed chase. it ended on a dirt road where the suspect got out and ran, moments later he shot himself. fox channel showed where he shot himself and shepard smith apologized to viewers at the time. this was followed by a statement by vice president of news channel. we took every precaution to avoid every such live incident by putting helicopter pictures on five seconds delay. this was a result of severe human error and we apologize for what viewers saw on the screen. >> more than two weeks ago on september 11th our consulate in benghazi was attacked and our ambassador and three other americans were killed and the white house response has, shall

we say, questionable. as the days passed the story is getting a bit more clear thanks to a journal kept by chris stevens. james rosen to tell us that piece of the puzzle and reaction over its use. >> at issue here is a hard bound book containing seven pages of handwritten notes made by ambassador stevens. they found journal three days after the attack there. stevens reportedly express concern about, quote, never ending security threats and he worried that he was on an al-qaeda hit list. state department spokesman the f.b.i. is investigating. however, a former u.s. ambassador told fox news megyn kelly the contents may expose, quote a failing in the overall approach to the region. >> i'm sure if he believed that security was a problem, he would

have informed the state department's bureau. they would have made a threat assessment and taken necessary steps. fact that he and three americans were killed shows there was massive failure of security. >> at first cnn cited one source an aide to secretary clinton, they. they gave a furious statement by failing assurances reportedly gave to his family to return the journal. cnn executives dispute. that now enter michael hastings best known for having written the story for rolling stone a few years back that resulted in the resignation of stanley mcchrystal. he e-mailed, quote, why does the state department search the consulate and find the diary first.

what other potential valuable intelligence was left behind? was any classified or top secret material also left? on classified material the answer is no, rinus shot back at him. you might want to ask cnn they took anything else from the crime scene. later on, why do you bother to ask questions you decided you know the answers to? why don't you hastings, fired back, aren't answers that are bs. and i understand why the investigation by the department of defense as reported by the "washington post" concluded beyond the doubt are unmitigated blank hole. how is that for a response. now, we have gotten that out of our system, i mean blank off. rinus did not respond to these comments. and they returned to the journal to state department on september 23rd.

reporting for news watch, james rosen. >> rick: the diary and cnn finding it and using it as a source for its reporting. would any other news organization have done any differently? >> no. i can't understand white house and state department indignation over the reporting of obvious news. any news organization would have done that. they were trying to change the subject. they wanted to make it what looks now about incompetence or intelligence or failure to respond to an obvious threat. >> rick: we heard james reporting on -- this is an assistant deputy secretary of state, deputy assistant. what kind of way is that to have a conversation with a reporter? >> dana said, this is what you

have now. has a little cadre who sees themselves as counter punchers and punching hard against the media and everybody else. it's a professional almost gild of spin doctors. now, we see one what they really sound and act like and talk like. everybody in politics knows them. >> rick: very little attention to this correspondent. mitt romney goes overseas during the summer and one of his aides has a little heated exchange with a reporter it's front page news. >> we have more evidence of the bias of mainstream media. i agree with judy it was news. big argument was between the state department and cnn as to whether it was some agreement was lived up to. here is the real problem. administration, obama administration wanted this diary

out of the way as rapidly as possible because chris stevens was concerned he wrote in his diary about the lack of security. they don't want to be held accountable on that. there was a report on friday that links the potential of a budget cut for security at the state department with what happened in benghazi. they don't want their fingerprints on that one. >> if the goal was to change the subject as jim suggests, did it work? did they throw the media off the trail? >> media were on the trail. there was nobody to throw off. it's only been a few reporters who have been really on this story. i think that what is interesting what is in diary, the journal, it wasn't just an attack but concerned about al-qaeda. that is something, on fox news has reported on, they knew within 24 hours according to intelligence officials this was linked to al-qaeda.

i'm bret baier state department announced that is temporarily withdrawing more staff from libyan and tripoli. they hope to return them early next week but they will reassess. this comes two weeks after the deadly attack in benghazi. even though the administration initially and repeatedly denied that assault with terrorism, it was at the same time working with the assumption it was just that. >> rick: that is bret baier and even though the white house claimed the attack in benghazi was due to a spontaneous reaction to a u kluib clip insulting to muslims they knew it was terror attack. was there a cover-up. why would the white house internally classify something as terror and send ambassador susan

rice days later to claim it was responsible taken chris? >> that is question. it appears there is a cover-up. i've been trying, judy has been trying to track down what has happened. you are told what they were operating under the best information she had and she was kousmg it with most recent information. she was so specific but it was just contrary to common sense. there is no -- to compare what was happening in cairo to say that the movie caused it. protestors don't care rp gs and things like that. so the media had a disturbing lack of curiosity about this and holding their feet to the fire. >> there is another element. up in news cycle the desire to get something out into the public arena quickly often brings mistakes like this.

i think as colin powell demonstration at the u.n. supposedly in iraq and went on the sunday talk showing. he was talking about what he thought at the time was true. it may or may have been true and stuff may have gone to syria, but this is function of news cycle. >> the statement months in preparation, colin powell. this was the opposite. this was kind of playing rope-a-dope with the media. it's 17 days after the attack on u.s. consulate to be determined al-qaeda related. that is triumph for them in terms of fogging up the issue for two and a half weeks. >> there is a political motivation. this is white house administration that doesn't like to talk about a war on terror. that wants to create the impression and narrative that al-qaeda is weak to the point of

being nearly ineffective and terror attack by an al-qaeda backed group on our consulate in benghazi smacked in the face of that? >> precisely. that is why you had the unwillingness to back off until the facts won't say anything about else about ridiculous notion that was brought about a movie. there were two attacks, people must separate them. one may or may not have been related to some people protesting. why do we not know the answer to that question? secondly there was another attack four hours lakes at the secret annex. it was because of the media we know this was a c.i.a. installation. not because congress and senators have been asking the question. >> as mark twain said a lie can get around halfway around the world... for the most part media
